Volcanoes National Park

View from the end of the Chain of Craters Road (the white plume is steam from lava flowing into the sea)

The astoundingly beautiful and diverse Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is a day trip you won't want to miss when staying at the Bamboo House.

About an hours drive west on 11, the park encompasses 2 of Hawaii's 3 volcanoes, Mauna Loa (the higher) and Kilauea (the lower).

Please check out the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park website before you go, to plan your trip and to check on any possible area closures and air quality due to eruptions.

Holei Sea Arch

There's a fabulous interactive map on their web site of the whole park, where you can see hiking and biking trails, roads within the park, points of interest, visitor centers, restrooms, etc.

Lava Field

Drive down the Chain of Craters Road from the Kilauea Visitors Center to the Pacific Ocean to see all of the magnificently changing vistas from dark, dramatic lava fields to the sparkling blue sea.

View from Crater Rim Drive

Take Crater Rim Drive around the steaming vent of Kilauea and hike deep underground into the Thurston Lava Tube (be sure to bring a headlamp).

Inside the Thurston Lava Tube

Be prepared to learn alot, see even more and have a really fun and interesting day!

Aloha, Catherine
